Protect Your Pipes This Winter

Frozen Pipe

This year has taught us to be prepared for the unexpected, so let’s take steps now to protect our homes from busted pipes and all the headaches associated with a major water loss during, or even after the holidays.

Interesting fact, water pipes begin to freeze when the outside temperature is around 20 degrees and it stays like that for at least 6 hours. However, insulation in your home and around the pipers helps prevent them from freezing in most cases. So for the few others, where the pipes might be older, or if you are not sure just how good the insulation is around the pipes, here are a few tips to get you through the winter months.

  1. Keep water faucets running with a slow drip
  2. Leave the cabinet doors open near pipes
  3. Unhook the hose from outside the house
  4. Install heat tape
  5. Seal leaks to prevent cold air from entering your home
  6. Check the temperature in the house to ensure there is enough heat on those colder days
